Quranic Verses Concerning Gender Based on al-Tafsīr al-Kabīr by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī

This article discusses issues related to gender-based on some verses of the Quran as interpreted by one of the renowned Muslim theologians and exegesis of the Quran, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d.1209) in his famous work, Tafsīr al-Kabīr. Focussing on a few relevant verses related to gender such as al-Hujurāt 49:13, al-Nisā’ 4:1, 4, 32, this article further analyses al-Rāzī’s elaborations on the complementary role of men and women, especially within the family institution. Not denying the fact that there are differences between men and women in terms of biology and status in Islamic law, al-Rāzī however argues that the differences are being balanced by the heavy role of men, especially as the leader of family and protector of women and their children.
