The Concept of Fiqh in Economic Thought of al-Ghazālī

Imam al-Ghazālī is a remarkable scholar in Islamic history with his expertise in theology, jurisprudence and mysticism. He also had contributed significantly in economic views even at micro level. His corpus in the concept of money, the theory of supply and demand and economic development are and worth notable to be observed and studied. This paper aims at identifying the concept of fiqh that influenced his economic thought through analyzing his main corpus in Uṣūl al-Fiqh namely, al-Mustaṣfā and al-Mankhūl. As a result, this study finds that his economic thought was really affected by his fiqh cognitive in the state of balancing between maslahah and mafsadah, ‘urf concept and his jurisprudence opinions extracted from his prominent books al-Tabr al-Masbūk dan Iḥyā’ ‘Ulūm al-Dīn.
