Abstract

This article discusses the framework for the study of heresy according to Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah. The main issues discussed in this article are: [i] the definition, history and issues of heresy; [ii] the thoughts of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah; and [iii] the study of heresy according to Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah scholars. The writing of this article is based on a qualitative study with the application of content analysis methods into Islamic texts and the works of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah scholars in the field of Usuluddin. The primary sources that form the basis of this writing are the works of Usul al-Dīn or ‘Ilm al-Kalām that related to the study of al-Firaq al-Islāmiyyah (Ideologies of Islamic Thought). In conclusion, ‘Ilm al-Kalām with the framework thought of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah is a mechanism in preserving the purity of Islam from any deviation, misguidance and disbelief. Expertise in the study of heresy, religions and ideologies requires individuals to have exposure to particularly in ‘Ilm al-Kalām and the fields of Usul al-Dīn Studies in general. Neglect of relevant areas can lead to confusion in the formulation of a study, discussion, and debate.
